What is CBD Microdosing?

Essentially, CBD microdosing is spreading out your dose of CBD over the course of an entire day, versus taking a larger dose once a day.

So, if you were taking 20mg of CBD every morning, if you begin microdosing, you would spread out those 20mg over the course of an entire day, taking 4mg five times a day:

  • 8am
  • 11pm
  • 2pm
  • 5pm
  • 8pm

Why Should I Microdose CBD?

Microdosing allows the benefits of CBD to be more evenly spread out throughout the day. Whether you’re looking for stress relief or tension relief or to just have a more peaceful day, microdosing can really help.

How do I Microdose CBD?

Step 1: Divide up dose over day

The first step in microdosing CBD is to figure out how much CBD you need to take per day and how far apart your doses should be spread.

As in the example we listed earlier, let’s say you take 20mg of CBD a day. When microdosing, you want to divide that dosage over the course of a 12-hour day. The goal is to evenly take doses from approximately the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep. Here is an example schedule of when you would take CBD:

  • 8am - 4mg
  • 11pm - 4mg
  • 2pm - 4mg
  • 5pm - 4mg
  • 8pm - 4mg

Total: 20 mg in 12 hours

As far as dosages go, you would divide your total dosage (20mg) by however many times you are taking it per day (5 times). So, you would take 4mg every 3 hours. If you’re taking 30mg total, it would be 6mg every 3 hours and so forth. 

The next part is a little tricky—figuring out how much 4mg is! There is approximately 30mg in one full dropper of CBD oil, so you would need to fill the dropper about a fifth of the way. Alternately, you could see how many drops are in one full dropper, and divide that by five to figure out how many drops of CBD you should take.

Step 2: Keep track with a journal

One of the most important parts of microdosing is monitoring how you feel throughout the day, especially when you first start out. This will help you determine if you’re taking too much or too little CBD!

You should monitor whatever reason you’re taking CBD. If you’re taking it to relieve headaches, monitor if and when you get headaches, and how severe they are. If you’re taking it to relieve muscles aches and tension, record how your muscles feel, as well as any physical activity. If you’re taking it to relieve stress, keep track of your stress levels throughout the day, as well as any outside factors that might impact you.

Over time, you’ll get a feel for how much CBD you should be taking at once, and what the appropriate dosage is for you to feel happy and healthy.

Step 3: Adjust dose if needed

Since you’re hopefully monitoring your dosages as well as how you feel, you should adjust your dosage based on your feelings. If you’re still experiencing symptoms, you might need to slightly up your dosage. If you feel great, you might consider lowering your dosage.

What are the Drawbacks of Microdosing CBD?

You might be wondering if there are any drawbacks to microdosing CBD. There is no proof that you can overdose on CBD, which is why many people choose it for all-natural relief of whatever stress or tension they’re experiencing.

So while you can’t technically overdose on CBD, the old saying holds true: too much of a good thing is too much. One of the potential drawbacks of microdosing is that you might unintentionally take more CBD than you would have in a single dose over the course of the entire day.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you are carefully monitoring how you feel. However, it is important to acknowledge, especially if you want to be regimented with the amount of CBD you take every day.

How Much CBD Should I Microdose?

The basic way to microdose is to divide your normal morning dosage by 5, which is how many times a day you will take CBD. On average, that would be about 4mg of CBD per microdose.

The goal is to still take your same amount of CBD, just spreading it out over the course of a day. So when in doubt, always check back to make sure you’re still taking the same amount.
