At Highline, giving back to the community is always important to us. This month, in honor of Earth Day on April 22, we’re turning our charitable eye on Global Green and their Our Cities Coalition project with a donation composed of 1% of all sitewide sales made from April 1-26th. To celebrate and educate, keep reading to learn more about Global Green and their Our Cities Coalition project as well as how we at Highline are building our own approach to sustainability.
What is Global Green?
Global Green is an environmental nonprofit dedicated to helping people, places, and the planet. In 1993, Mikhail Gorbachev (yes, that Gorbachev!) founded Green Cross International in response to the 1992 Rio Earth Summit call to create a “Red Cross for the environment.” The following year, Gorbachev connected with environmental activist Diane Meyer Simon to launch the US affiliate of Green Cross International, dubbed Global Green, with the mission to foster a value shift toward a sustainable and secure future across the globe.
Today, Global Green is composed of a diverse and talented team of hardworking and innovative individuals who are dedicated to solving what they acknowledge to be the world’s toughest sustainability challenges.
Our Cities Coalition
Our Cities Coalition is Global Green’s newest program focused on partnering with cities across the world. We’re so excited about the mission that we couldn’t choose it for our Earth Day donation fast enough!
Their first city partnership is with Ojai, California, with the concept of creating the first Global Green community. As described on their website, the goal is to create an eight-acre Climate Park near Ojai City Hall to function as an educational space for teaching the community how to live a sustainable lifestyle. The first Climate Park will be a holistic system that improves and builds upon the sustainability of the existing landscape while involving the community in these efforts. Important factors include biodiversity, watershed management, renewable energy, educational opportunities for local schools, on-site leadership training, and eco-visitation opportunities.
Zooming out, the Climate Park will offer a model for sustainability that can be applied to any community around the globe, teaching individuals how to reduce climate change and live in harmony with the environment. Global Green already has partnerships and foundations established with 28 cities across the United States through their Sustainable Neighborhood Solutions program, so the Our Cities Coalition is a natural next step.
We’re thrilled to contribute to Global Green’s investment in the Ojai Climate Park and we can’t wait to find out which city will be next! The only way we can create healthier, greenier, and more connected communities is to do it together.
What About Highline’s Sustainability?
On that note, you may be curious about our own sustainability efforts. We thought that might be the case, so we have some key takeaways from our latest sustainability report to share with all the Highline Humans.
Our team, as a whole, cares deeply about the environment. To that end, we’re aware of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the impact they have on the planet. In 2020, we developed an understanding of our footprint by accessing our GHG emissions using numbers from the first half of the year. The good news is that we have minimal scope 1 emissions, which refers to emissions that we are directly responsible for, such as within production facilities.
We can always do more, so a future goal is to track the emissions of the supply chain in full in order to calculate a “true” number. We take pride in the partners we choose to work with and always look for suppliers that share our core values. For example, our agricultural partners have been designed with water and waste management in mind. We will continue to encourage all our partners toward sustainable strategies, especially with regard to reducing GHG emissions.
On the subject of our agricultural partners, it is top-of-mind for us to be aware of the potential negative impacts that procurement practices can have on the environment. That’s why we work closely with a single supplier, and why our main criteria for that supplier was to be certified organic in their production and handling operations. We’re proud to say that our supplier is 100% Certified USDA Organic. In addition, they use ZERO pesticides, chemicals, or metals. Only the purest CBD for Highline Humans!
In 2021, we’re working on building out a formalized process to screen our partners for their environmental practices. In addition to working with suppliers that are Certified USDA Organic, additional criteria we plan to develop includes waste reduction targets, sustainable packaging, and water management. In addition to encouraging our partners, we’re continuing to build out our own sustainability initiatives – more to come on those specifics!
After a year that completely upended everyday life, the theme for this year’s Earth Day couldn’t possibly be more fitting: Restore Our Earth™. Change begins with action, from former carnivores reconsidering their diets to groups of students organizing efforts to plant trees in their own backyards. We’re proud to take action by donating 1% of all sitewide sales to Global Green’s Our Cities Coalition project – won’t you join us?
