How to Use CBD for Workout Recovery

Is Sky Ting Yoga your thing? How about the Agdal Method, a workout inspired by yoga and pilates? Some love HIIT and classic cardio, while others practice simple Sun Salutations every day. No matter how you work out, recovery is as crucial to an effective experience as are the activities themselves.

With the growing focus on CBD’s relationship to wellness, it’s no wonder that this compound can be helpful for workout recovery, too. Whether you’re totally new to CBD or just new to CBD for workout recovery, keep reading to find out why you might just want to give it a try.

CBD & the Body

For those who may need a quick refresher, CBD is the easy-to-remember name for Cannabidiol, one of over 100 compounds from the cannabis plant. Commercial CBD, like the kind we use, comes from hemp, which is a type of cannabis plant that doesn’t contain THC, the psychoactive compound we associate with “getting high.”

When the Farm Bill of 2018 legalized the use of non-THC cannabinoids from hemp grown in accordance with the legislation, CBD jumped in national recognition as a safe and natural option for those seeking the pain-relieving effects of cannabis.

The human body has a vast network of receptors, known as the endocannabinoid system, which play an important role in maintaining balanced body function. Our bodies naturally produce endocannabinoids and CBD can augment their effects, thanks to the interconnected endocannabinoid system. This is one of the reasons that CBD (as well as medical THC) can be so helpful in relieving a variety of pains and feelings of soreness.

Effects of CBD for Workout Recovery

To dig into this concept further for a piece exploring CBD workout recovery, MensHealth.com consulted Tara Laferrara, a former sprinter and a NASM certified personal trainer about her personal use of CBD. She described noticing a big difference in inflammation and stress after using CBD post-workout: “It basically manages and prevents my joint inflammation, that aching kind of feeling, that I'd get after a heavy lift day.”

It’s not just personal stories, though. A 2018 review of 132 original studies published in Frontiers in Neurology, a peer-reviewed journal about Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology, found CBD to have the following properties: anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antiemetic, antipsychotic, and neuroprotective. The two big findings concluded that CBD “can indeed reduce inflammation in the body and help improve pain and mobility in patients with multiple sclerosis.”

Dr. Perry Solomon, previous chief medical officer and founding member of HelloMD, also told MensHealth.com that, broadly speaking, CBD “does decrease inflammation when it's rubbed on muscles as an ointment or taken orally.” We don’t have quite enough information to state that it definitively works, every time, but studies are looking great for supporting CBD for workout recovery, due to reduction of inflammation and muscle soreness.

Speaking of doctors, it’s always important to speak to your doctor when introducing something new to your lifestyle, such as CBD. While CBD is widely regarded as safe to use, it’s just a good idea to keep your doctor informed about what goes in and out of your body – especially if you’re flat-out replacing more traditional anti-inflammatory treatments with CBD for workout recovery.
